I chose to focus on current events in Minnesota government because it’s where I currently work with clients in recovery, it’s where my children currently live, and it’s where I lived for the first 45 years of my life. I have personally seen how affected my clients, friends, and family have been by what’s happening in Minnesota, and although controversial, I think it’s important to educate people on the facts and guide them in protecting themselves and their neighbors in this very scary and uncertain time. I am writing this article at the end of January, 2026, so any current events that happen after that will not be mentioned. I can’t predict the future, but I can report on the past and the present.
I remember talking to my son on August 27, 2025, after a mass shooter at Annunciation Catholic Church killed two innocent children and injured 30 others before killing himself. The shooting had happened on the same path he took to work, and he had driven past it minutes before the shooting. It was probably the first time I heard my son sound truly scared, and that hit hard as a mother. It was an overwhelming and helpless feeling that I can’t keep my kids safe anymore because extreme violence can happen anywhere, any time, to anyone. If anyone reading this article can relate, you are not alone.
Fast forward to December, 2025, when Operation Metro Surge (Federal Enforcement in Minnesota) was implemented. Operation Metro Surge was/is a large federal immigration operation led by DHS (Department of Homeland Security), including ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement) and border patrol. With this order came a surge of federal immigration agents infiltrating Minneapolis-St. Paul and greater Minnesota. By January 12, 2026, Attorney General Keith Ellison led a federal lawsuit against DHS and ICE to halt the operation, arguing it violates state and constitutional rights such as the First and Tenth Amendments. The lawsuit alleges ICE and federal agents engaged in aggressive raids, force used against peaceful speakers and bystanders, and detentions at sensitive places such as schools and hospitals.
I hate that the lawsuit reads alleges, because so many people have recorded the unnecessary violence and unlawful way ICE agents have been treating people with dark skin or anyone resisting their mission, that the facts are hard to argue with. Today’s age of cell phones recording everything has given the public an opportunity to see events happening in real time from multiple perspectives, and make up their own minds about what actually occurred. Even when the government and media try to convince people otherwise.
As of January 24, 2026, two horrifying public executions of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal ICE agents, as well as multiple videos of agents illegally accosting and arresting legal citizens by violently dragging them from vehicles, homes, and places of employment had been televised around the world. What Minnesotans did to combat the unnecessary violence was nothing short of a miracle. Peaceful rallies and communities coming together to help and protect each other were encouraged and recorded at large. After the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, Minneapolis-St. Paul went up in smoke, and luckily history has not repeated itself. Minnesota learned that violence doesn’t solve anything, but love, compassion, and empathy can endure and survive everything.
Thousands of Minnesotans have been gathering in organized, peaceful protests against the mistreatment of its citizens, and communities have come together to protect its members in a beautiful and harmonious way. Citizens are wearing whistles and blowing them when ICE is near, neighbors are shopping for and delivering food and supplies to families who are scared to leave their homes, and volunteers are stationing outside schools, churches, and businesses to protect innocent children and legal citizens from being unlawfully detained by violent ICE agents rounding up anyone with brown skin. I am so proud of how Minnesota is handling the abuse and unjustified mistreatment of minority populations, and pray things calm down quickly and without further public executions. I also pray for the safety and security of all its citizens.
Even before ICE invaded Minnesota, the state was already making headlines with the scandalous news of billions of dollars laundered through fake childcare centers, putting a freeze on childcare assistance and other benefits like Medicaid that vulnerable populations had been relying on to survive. I have personally seen how much this affects the innocent clients I serve as a licensed addiction counselor by the number of clients who quit treatment so they could work more to afford the extra child or health care expenses. When clients who need addiction treatment drop out before they are ready, the recidivism rate skyrockets, and clients who were thriving in treatment end up using again without the tools and resources needed to remain sober.
Although it’s mainly Minnesota making the headlines for topics like fraud and inhumane treatment by federal ICE agents, that doesn’t mean the next headline won’t be in your city or state. Every American right now should be standing up for humanity and questioning outdated beliefs they have regarding what safety and security means to them. Ask important questions, like, “Why is the government normalizing these unlawful acts?” It reminds me of the famous poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller regarding the Holocaust. For those of you who are unfamiliar:

I encourage everyone reading this to check out the current events in government that are affecting their states, and to look into how you can personally help in your own communities. I hope by sharing my personal experience with how the government is affecting Minnesotans, I can make a small difference myself. My experience might come from a sheltered perspective in Florida for the moment, but unless I speak out now they will come for us next. Stay safe and stay connected everyone!
